Henry Cowell Redwood State Park: Ancient Giants, Sacred Stillness, and a Ceremony Written for the Forest

Exchange Your Vows Inside a Living Cathedral of Redwood Trees

There are places in this world that feel like they were made for moments of deep significance — and Henry Cowell Redwood State Park is one of them. Towering coastal redwoods, some over a thousand years old, rise like cathedral columns around you as you walk a soft path through one of Santa Cruz County's most beloved natural sanctuaries. The light filters down through the canopy in golden ribbons. The air smells of damp earth and ancient wood. And everywhere you look, there is a quiet, unhurried majesty that reminds you that love — like these trees — is built to last.

For couples dreaming of a redwood elopement, Henry Cowell offers something truly rare: the chance to stand inside a fairy ring — a circle of redwoods that have grown together from a single root system, forming a natural sanctuary that feels almost otherworldly. To exchange your vows at the center of that ring is to be held by something far older and wiser than any of us. It is unforgettable.

And because this setting deserves words that rise to meet it, I've written a special ceremony piece created specifically for couples marrying among the redwoods — honoring the trees themselves as your witnesses, and weaving the wisdom of the forest into the promises you make to each other.

Permits — I Handle Everything

Henry Cowell requires a special event permit for ceremonies, but you won't need to navigate a single form. When you book my Elopement Package, I can secure your permit at cost and include my liability insurance — saving you approximately $100 compared to arranging it independently. No paperwork, no stress. Just the two of you, your guests and the forest.

Ready to say your vows beneath the redwood trees? Let's make it happen.

Planning Tips for Your Santa Cruz Elopement

Book Early — Especially for Permitted Sites

Santa Cruz is one of the most sought-after elopement destinations on the California coast, and the most magical spots fill up faster than you might expect. If your dream ceremony is at a location that requires a permit — such as Henry Cowell Redwood State Park or Fall Creek — plan to reach out at least one month in advance to secure your date. The earlier the better, especially during spring and summer when the coast is at its most beautiful and the calendar fills quickly.

Weather

Santa Cruz enjoys mild weather year-round, but the coastal breeze can surprise you. Mornings along the bluffs and beaches tend to be cooler and sometimes foggy — and that marine layer often burns off by midday to reveal stunning sunshine. For forest ceremonies at Henry Cowell or Fall Creek, temperatures are generally comfortable but can be cool in the shade. I always recommend checking Weather Underground for a forecast up to ten days out so you can plan your layers accordingly.

What to Wear

Leave the heels at the hotel — for outdoor settings, that is. Whether you are walking a forest path at Fall Creek, making your way down to the bluffs at West Cliff Drive, or sinking your toes into the sand at Blacks Beach, flat shoes will serve you far better than heels. Sparkly sneakers, sandals, cowboy boots, and bare feet are all fully encouraged. For more refined venues like Shadowbrook Restaurant or Chapel on the Hill, heels are absolutely welcome — the paths are forgiving and the settings are as polished as your look. Whatever you wear, a light wrap or jacket is always a good idea for outdoor coastal ceremonies, even on sunny days.

Keep Your Guest List Intimate

Most of Santa Cruz's most beautiful elopement locations are naturally suited to small gatherings — and honestly, that is part of their magic. A smaller guest count means more flexibility, more ease, and a ceremony that feels genuinely personal rather than produced. Some spots, like the West Cliff Drive bluff, are best suited for up to six guests. Others can accommodate a few more. When in doubt, ask — I will always help you find the right setting for your vision.

Parking

Good news — most Santa Cruz elopement locations are wonderfully accessible. Blacks Beach, West Cliff Drive, Chapel on the Hill, and Shadowbrook all offer free parking nearby. Henry Cowell Redwood State Park charges $10 per car, and Fall Creek offers free parking. No valet required.

After Your Ceremony

Santa Cruz has no shortage of wonderful ways to celebrate after your vows. Shadowbrook Restaurant is the obvious choice for a truly romantic dinner — iconic, intimate, and unforgettable. The Santa Cruz Wharf, the charming shops of Capitola Village, and the many wonderful restaurants along Pacific Avenue are all within easy reach of your ceremony, whatever location you choose.
